ELECTROPLATING strength to strength SFE goes from This year,

Wolverhampton-based metal finishing and surface treatment equipment specialist Surface Finishing

Engineering (SFE) Ltd, celebrates the fifth anniversary of its formation.

Over the last five years, the company has firmly established itself as a leading contender in the field, having

secured many major contracts –particularly

in the aerospace sector –often in the face of

fierce competition from much larger companies.

The management team at Surface Finishing Engineering has been involved in the design, manufacture and installation of equipment for electroplating and other surface treatment and coating processes for over 30 years –ranging from manual plants to sophisticated computer controlled automated installations with full data management facilities. In addition, the repair, maintenance, modification, updating and relocation of existing plants –both SFE's own as well as other manufacturers' systems –forms an important part of the company's business. SFE has also recently acquired Surface Dynamics, aspecialist in controlled shot peening, blast finishing and wet chemical processing and associated media, considerably enhancing the company's surface finishing capability.

“Welike to work as an extension of acustomer's own operation,” says Sales Director,David Addison. “And our constant pursuit for perfection in satisfying the increasing demands of constantly evolving environmental and health and safety considerations keeps us at the forefront of the surface finishing industry.Added to this, because we are arelatively small, close-knit team, we have the flexibility to respond very quickly to customers’ requirements, unlike some larger organisations.”

All SFE’s work is carried out by its fully trained and experienced engineers, working in accordance with fully detailed method statements and risk assess- ments. The experience and expertise within the company enables it to offer complete project management –from conception to post-project – on new plant build and the relocation of existing equipment, both of which it has carried out on a

worldwide basis. SFE’s list of prestigious clients is testament to its high level of service and customer satisfaction. Some typical examples follow.

Major plant refurbishment project

SFE was recently awarded amajor contract with aworld leader in the defence industry, which includes the relocation of equipment from two different sites to one purpose-built facility. The contract involves the dismantling and deconta- mination of zinc plating, sulphuric acid processing and chromic acid processing plants, and the refurbishment and modification of all three plants at SFE’s Wolverhampton site.

Once the necessary modifications have been completed, the control system installed and adry run test conducted, all plants will be re-installed and commissioned at the customer’s new facility.

Time is of the essence, especially as downtime has to be kept at an absolute minimum, so detailed project plans with task-by task timescales were sub- mitted to provide the customer with the reassurance that each stage would be completed on schedule.

“Attaining such alarge-scale project has opened many doors and has established us as serious competitors in afierce industry.Working with such aprestigious company has proved to competitors, customers, and potential customers that SFE has the ability to handle projects of all scales,” comments David Addison.

Another recent SFE contract, this time on asmaller scale, was carried out for aleading company in
