We have

all

experienced what I call “the graying of Ironwood” when it comes to our golf games. ‘90s

Thinking back to the late IMGA had well over 350 active

members while today that number has dwindled to under 250 active members. Just last Tuesday there were a number of empty holes in the morning due to lack of participation. There are many reasons for the decline in membership; but, a major cause is the aging process and I can certainly attest to that. I realize how my game had changed since first joining IMGA in 1997.

Some (maybe many)

would say it has gone from bad to worse. That aside, it has changed and it has for many members.

In an attempt to make

golf more enjoyable for more people, IMGA is considering an experiment this summer that may help some of our older golfers who feel it increasingly difficult to compete on Men’s Day. A process where tees will be adjusted based on index or age or a combination of both to, in fact, shorten the course and hopefully increase the enjoyment level of those golfers and maybe even bring back some members who have already left IMGA. An additional flight on Men’s Day would increase the possibility of winning for our older golfers. Many details need to be worked out; but, a trial period would begin sometime this summer. It is something worth considering and more information will be provided in the very

near future. IMGA has “lost” another old member.

Gene Bacon and his wife have sold their home in Ironwood Estates and have purchased a home in The Villages in central Florida. Gene has not played with IMGA for a couple of years due to extensive

travel in their motor home but was a very

active member for many years. I also talked to Larry Collins

recently. I hadn’t seen Larry around for several months and called him to see what has been happening in his life. Larry recently retired from his long time position as a ranger at Oakwood and has been contemplating joining Cottonwood Golf Club where he and his wife Ruth live. He hasn’t decided so we may still see him back at Ironwood. Larry is one of the truly “good” guys who played for many years

as a member of IMGA. Hope to see you back at Ironwood soon, Larry. 
