Sailing around Cape Horn Bruce and Sharon Gale have lived in

Oakwood at Sun Lakes for 10 years. In that time they have met and enjoyed so many Sun Lakers’ stories about their travels. With Bruce being retired military and Sharon a member of the Peace Corps in the 1960s, they have always traveled and enjoyed living in different countries. Cruising became a part of their lives after retirement. One day last November someone mentioned to them that the Carnival ship Splendor was repositioning from Los Angeles to New York and instead of going through the Panama Canal was taking the long trip around Cape Horn. Having never visited South America, the Gales found themselves

researching the countries and

ports where the ship would be stopping. Believing that this would be a trip of a lifetime, they made their booking through El Sol Travel and began planning their 48-day cruise. The Splendor left Los Angeles on February 3rd, sailed down the coasts of

the Pacifi c

Ocean of Mexico, Central America, South America and then around Cape Horn to the Atlantic Ocean, back up the eastern side of South America,

the Caribbean and fi nally

docked in New York City. The ship stopped at 21 ports and 10

countries, plus sailed through the Darwin Channel, the Strait of Magellan and around Cape Horn. Bruce and Sharon took 14 excursions sponsored by Carnival. After docking in New York on March 23, they stayed four days in New York City sightseeing and going to two Broadway plays. Who could not fall in love with New York?

Bruce and Sharon Gale in Ushuaia, Argentina, the southernmost city in the World.

The people they met, the countries, the

variety of climate and the exciting activities they experienced made this truly a trip of a lifetime. Examples were riding a Peruvian horse, swimming with giant sea turtles, watching penguins watching tourists, viewing Rio de Janeiro from the top of the mountain, Christ the Redeemer, sailing the Darwin Channel seeing glaciers, the Strait of Magellan and sailing around Cape Horn; plus crossing the equator twice, and enjoying the many entertainments and activities provided on board the Splendor. Coming home to Sun Lakes was welcomed

after so many days at sea, but the pictures and the memories will last a lifetime. 
