fruit in response to homeowner requests, we gleaned more than 17 tons of grapefruits, oranges and other citrus throughout Sun Lakes for area food banks (lemons were in short supply because of the winter cold snap). A total of 54 volunteers participated on one or more days as we picked at 216 houses on eight Saturdays and Mondays from February 18-March 18. Several awards, most announced with

a touch of whimsy by MC Bob Coats and Sarah Kelzenberg, highlighted the season- ending celebration at the Cottonwood home of Jim and Arlene Thrower, whose garage served for the third straight year as Citrus Central to receive fruit during the picking season. They also coordinated with United Food Bank for weekly pickups of fi lled bins.

Barbara Bass was named Queen Citrus

and Ralph Rundle was designated King Orange for their steady participation on picking days. The father-daughter team of Mike and Sheila Sellers was called out as the Dynamic Duo, picking both on regular days and in extra sessions. Jerry McHugh earned the Pick ‘Em and Pack ‘Em award for the high volume of citrus hauled in his pickup truck. Dave Smits was cited as Team Captain of the Year. Skip Raupp and Dale Larson, who showed up time after time despite some aches and pains, got special Warrior citations. Many thanks to prize donators Table 49,

Pita Souvli and Frio Mio. In addition, all pickers were honored as

members of a category: Lemon Lifters for fi rst-year participants, Grapefruit Grabbers for those with two years experience and the Order of the Orange for veterans of at least three seasons. See photos. Team captains,

in addition to Dave,

Bob, Mike and Sheila, included Tom and — CITRUS cont. on page 50
