Friends of the Library presents a true story of bravery May 1

Fred Cerruti The Sun Lakes Friends of the Library

is bringing you a WOW program on Wednesday, May 1, at 10:00 a.m. This is almost like a Twilight Zone story. As they say, “truth is stranger than fi ction.” From the Navajo Reservation to the South Pacifi c Islands fi ghting in WWII; from a peaceful life, albeit a hard life, to a recruiting bus; from a Navy recruiting station to Marine basic training. A new language/code had to transform common words like “sheep” to unknown words like “bombs.” A code so secret that it was over 40 years before it was declassifi ed and recognized. These brave men were honored by Presidents Reagan and Bush. Laura Tohe’ Ph.D, our guest speaker, is

Dine’ (Navajo). She was raised by her family and relatives on the reservation. Dr. Tohe’ is a professor with distinction in the English Department at ASU where she teaches Indigenous American Literature, Poetry,

Women’s Literature and Film Studies. She has written and co-authored four award winning books. She writes essays, stories and children’s plays that have appeared in the U.S., Canada and Europe. Dr. Tohe’ wrote a commissioned libretto, Enemy Slayer, A Navajo Oratorio, for the Phoenix Symphony. So join us for coffee and a true story

of bravery on May 1, at 10:00 a.m. in the Lecky Room at the Sun Lakes Library, Robson

Branch of Maricopa County.

The library is located next to the United Methodist Church on Riggs Rd. The address (for you GPS folks) is 9330 E. Riggs Rd, Sun Lakes, AZ 85248. There will be a Friends of the Library business meeting from 9:00-9:45 a.m. prior to the program. It is suggested that you use the church parking lot for easier and safer entering and exiting during this program.
