The 2013 event was also the fourth year to include an awards ceremony. As in former years, the award winners are independently determined firstly by the Annual OSJ Conference advisory panel, and then by the readership of OSJ. In the relatively short time that they have been running they have become an important part of the Annual OSJ conference, and of the support vessel industry as a whole. Each year, the publicity received by the winners of the awards has grown, and each year the number of votes cast for the awards has risen. This year saw more than four and a half thousand votes cast by readers of the journal. This year, for the first time, with the exception of the lifetime achievement award, each of the awards was also sponsored by a leading player in the market. Support Vessel of the Year and Shipowner of the Year were sponsored by DVB Bank; Innovation of the Year by Nor-Shipping; the Environmental Award by GE Power Conversion; and the Offshore Renewables Award was sponsored by Damen Shipyards. The Lifetime Achievement Award as always was presented by Offshore Support Journal.
In 2012 we introduced two new awards to our line up, in addition to the Support Vessel of the Year, Shipowner of the Year, Innovation of the Year and the Lifetime Achievement Award. The new awards are an Environmental Award, which is presented to a company, project, product or other innovation that has contributed to a reduction in the environmental footprint of the OSV industry; and secondly, an Offshore Renewables Award, which is awarded to a company, project, product or other innovation that has made a significant contribution to the development of the offshore renewables market. As in former years, the awards process started with shortlists drawn up by the advisory panel, after which voting was thrown open to industry. This year, the advisory panel included: John J Gallagher from classification society ABS; John Shock, offshore marine segment manager at Caterpillar Marine Power; Ian Perrott, CEO of ER Offshore; Tellef Tellefsen, senior vice president and head of shipping at Exporkreditt in Norway; Venkatraman Sheshashayee, CEO at Jaya Holdings; and

Guests from 45 different countries gathered at the Lancaster Hotel in London for the award presentations and gala dinner, with celebrations continuing until the early hours. The recipient of the Lifetime Achievement Award was KS Lee, founder of EMAS group (part of Ezra Holdings), for his inspirational achievement in growing the business over the past 20 years to become the global OSV ‘super power’ it now is. The highly prized Support Vessel of the Year Award was won by Far Solitaire. The award was accepted by the ship’s owner Farstad Shipping, designer Rolls-Royce Marine and shipbuilder, STX OSV (now known as VARD). Shipowner of the Year was won by Emas Group, the Innovation of the Year award by Rolls-Royce Marine, the Offshore Renewables Award was claimed by A2SEA for their turbine installation vessel Sea Installer, and the Environmental Award was won by Østensjø Rederi for its platform supply vessel Edda Ferd. new feature of the Annual OSJ Conference this year was a pre-conference workshop, which took as its subject ‘amending an OSV charter party to meet the requirements of the Maritime Labour Convention (MLC) 2006.’ This well-received event, which preceded the first day of the conference was led by Ian Perrott, CEO, ER Offshore & Tony Concagh, a partner at Stephenson Harwood LLP, and was designed to bring attendees up to speed with how the standard OSV charter party may need to be amended to address the effects of the MLC 2006. The Annual OSJ Conference could not take place without the generous support of the sponsors, such as platinum sponsor Caterpillar, and our gold and silver sponsors ABS, Cargomaxx, Cummins, Carlsen Offshore, Damen Shipyards, DNV, DVB, Esnaad, Intellian, MacGregor, Nor- Shipping, Rolls-Royce Marine, Seabrokers Group, Stanford Marine, STX OSV (now known as VARD), Van Aalst Marine & Offshore and Zamil Offshore. The event also received backing from supporting organisations: the Emergency Response and Rescue Vessel Association, International Marine Contractors Association and The Nautical Institute. On behalf of the entire OSJ team we thank you all. We hope to see many of our readers in Singapore, 10-11 September 2013 for our first Asian OSJ Conference. More details can be found at
