Mist and cloud produce the ethereal atmosphere – beware the Baskerville hound!
Beware the day of mist and sun
THE great granite out- crop which stands like a fortress just a few miles from the coast of Devon has lured whole genera- tions of visitors to its mysterious presence. To tourists this is Dartmoor – to locals simply the moor. Forget the upstart pretenders at the head of the Exe or jostling at the shoulders of Bodmin. Dartmoor is the real deal.
Size alone would make it impressive. We’re talking nearly 800 square miles of des- olation. The nearest thing to a wilderness in modern-day Europe. And yet . . . and yet . . . There is a strange and haunting beauty about the place which
captivates many visi- tors. Some, it is true, will shiver and turn their backs – particular- ly when they catch a sight of the forbidding Dartmoor prison walls. But, take comfort sojourner, you have a choice. The prisoner must remain, staring out for hour after lonely hour over the seeming- ly endless landscape. However, Dartmoor isn’t unchanging.
Rather like its rival the sea, which lures

many a traveller away, the moor takes its quali- ty from the weather. The sky is big up here. Truly vast. Only in the sudden, surpris- ing valleys do you get respite from the firma- ment. Mist and cloud produce the ethereal atmosphere – beware the Baskerville hound! – and then the sun breaks through. Dartmoor – the moor – is transformed. And the unwary find, like many before them, they are captivated too.
