Sports and Watersports

Put down that beach ball and start to get active right now. Unless, of course, beach volleyball is your thing. In which case carry on.

Kangaroo to cotton socks

OK, you’re the sporty type and you’re mooching around look- ing for ways to enjoy your holi- day without turning into some sort of beach-potato.

First the bad news – you can’t tie your kangaroo down, sport. Not around here any- way. (We can’t speak for Cornwall, of course.)

The good news is that, with that one proviso, just about anything else is possible – there’s something to cater for every taste. Even the mattresses are interior sprung.

It’s true that the west country is not the first place that comes to mind in the pantheon of sporting greats. That accolade seems to belong to our great industrial cities – and they’re welcome to it. There has to be some compensation after all. But young Tom Daley (bless his little cotton socks) has shown the world that we can, indeed, do sporting prowess. And that‘s not all he’s shown the world since Splash became compulsory viewing apparent- ly. But we digress . . .

The point is that, whatever your personal fancy, you’ll find it here. Country sports, water sports, field sports, in, on or under the ocean, everything is catered for. There is much to be said for being in a place that is well-accustomed to holiday- makers and to catering for their every need.

So, put down that beach ball and start to get active right now. Unless, of course, beach volleyball is your thing. In which case carry on. And sorry to have disturbed you.

Take a ride into beautiful Devonshire countryside

STAVERTON Riding School wants you to feel safe and take max- imum enjoyment from your visit.

Established for 15 years, it specialises in teaching children to

ride and introducing tourists to a fun expe- rience.

If you are on holi- day and want to ride in a mixed-age group, a starter hack is the best option.

This includes a 15 minute lesson with an instructor before you are escorted on a ride in the countryside. Children can enjoy a pony day, to include two hours of riding

and fun time with the horses and farm pets. Half days are avail- able.

For smaller chil- dren, there is a lesson and mini hack combi- nation on the lead rein. For local riders we offer lessons and hacks for all ages. The Saturday Club is the best way for children to learn as a well-supervised ses- sion is run, with a pro- gression route for stable management and riding.
