Devon’s ‘little outdoor Eden’

during their trip around the world, and will they spot Katy Koala in Australia and the Yeti (before he spots them!)?

Parking, picnic area and nursery entry are all free. A modest garden entry charge is made for adults but chil- dren go in free. The shop and tearooms serving light lunch- es and home-made cakes have absolutely fantastic panoramic views over the River Teign Estuary to Dartmoor. They have also recently invested in a high class espresso machine to improve the range and quali- ty of the coffee on offer to their customers.

PLANT World consists of four acres of landscaped hill- top gardens representing each of the five continents with a mature cottage garden and also a Mediterranean garden, and has been called Devon’s ‘little outdoor Eden’. Located between Torquay

and Newton Abbot in beauti- ful South Devon, it offers an outstanding collection of rare and exotic flowers, trees and shrubs from around the world, many of which can be bought in the adjacent rare plant nursery.

Established in 1985, Plant

World is the culmination of a plantsman’s vision holding a lifetime’s collection, and has been featured on the BBC’s Gardeners’ World, ITV’s Gardens For All and Channel 4’s Bloom.

Limitless vista with no boundaries

JUST 9 miles north of Plymouth in a valley on the western edge of Dartmoor lies one of the most captivating gardens in England. Visitors to The Garden House at Buckland Monachorum are not only inspired by the sheer volume and vari-

ety of the planting, but frequently stand to gaze at the wonderful views in all directions. The garden melds into its landscape so per- fectly that there appears to be no boundaries.

House is always proud to show off its famous array of wisterias in their varying hues of purple, mauve, pink and white. These eager- ly awaited plants adorn the ornamental bridges, clamber over the ‘Umbrella’ above Tom’s Steps as well as dress- ing the walls of the old vicarage and Walled Garden.

The ancient Walled Garden is the romantic heart of the Garden and its terraces of vibrant planting are at their best in the summer months when dazzling dahlias take centre stage. Here the planting is recognised to be in the traditional English style, but at least 4 acres of the western garden are given over to a nat- uralistic style of plant- ing where the plants grow as they might in their natural habitat. The South African style garden particularly is a riot of colour in mid- summer with a huge expanse of Californian poppies causing visitors to reach for their sun- glasses!

The new 2-acre Jubilee Arboretum is now open to the public and its wide, wheel- chair-friendly paths meander through meadowland where over 100 young trees are now planted. Once mature, the trees will provide a wonderful spectacle of spring, summer and autumn colour. The 50 metre lake with pretty orna- mental bridges at the lower end of the Arboretum is already attracting wildlife. The Tearooms serve lunches and delicious home-made cakes and cream teas. Any of the unusual plants to be seen in the garden can be bought at Plant Sales.

So... why not visit yourself and see why The Garden House is recognised as one of Devon’s favourite gar- dens!

The Garden House is open daily 10.30am - 5.00pm, March to October. Phone 01822 854769 or go to the website.
