All aboard to Salcombe

WHEN the Tucker family bought the South Sands Ferry from Gilbert Putt 25 years ago the boat “Harvest Reaper” was 6 years old, launched in April 1982. As this ferry was larger than the previ- ous boat it was no longer practical to load passen- gers onto the rocks on the south side of the bay, so the Mark One Sea Tractor was invented, based on a WW11 Army DKW (“Duck”). The Duck pro- vided a bridge from the beach to the boat but it was not without its prob- lems.

After 3 years of service Gilbert was approached by someone who wanted to buy the Duck to add to his military museum col- lection in Cornwall. A deal was struck so that he could buy the Duck and in return make a Sea Tractor that would pro- vide a mobile dock to take 30 passengers out to meet the ferry in deep

water, hence Mark 11 was created out of a 1940’s army Bedford truck. Mark 11 has pro- vided 28 years of invalu- able service to the ferry. This winter the Tuckers have decided to build a new Sea Tractor based on the Mark 11, but with a modern hydraulic system. This challenging job was given to John Cooke from Banana Shark Ltd and his technical director Kevin Stephens based in Churchstow. The heavy- weight job of fabricating the chassis from a 12 metre length of heavy metal tube was given to Torr View Forge from Torr Quarry and the hydraulic systems were supplied from Loglogic of Cullompton. All local suppliers and fabricators with a tremendous range of expertise; hidden tal- ent from the Southwest.

As in previous years the South Sands Ferry will be operational from Saturday 23rd March 2013 until the end of October, providing a half-hourly service from Whitestrand (Town Centre) to South Sands Beach, where there are two excellent hotels, a watersports centre and a short walk away Overbecks National Trust Gardens and Museum. Details of the service and interests can be found on their web- site. The ferry can be hired for private parties, trips to Kingsbridge, South Pool etc, after working hours ie. 1600 hrs.
