Kingsbridge

Kingsbridge is set in the heart of some of the prettiest countryside that you’re likely to find this side of heaven. It has a tranquil estuary (yes, we know it’s not a real one as there’s no river. But it will do for us, thank you very much)

FIRST OFF and to avoid later disappointment, let’s just make one thing clear. There is no cathe- dral in Kingsbridge. Two really nice churches, well worth a visit, and lots of chapels and meeting houses (well, we’re not without a spiritual dimension), but no cathedral – not even the ruins of one. Ever since that TV series reached the air- waves, we have had enquiries. This we do not mind.

But there are some who feel that, having witnessed the events on television, they know better than us. That, of course, is as it may be, but there’s still no blessed cathedral – nor an unblessed one either. So, what does Kings- bridge have to attract the visitor?

Well, if you want to see real, down-to-earth, genuine, modern-day, country Devon at its best, look no further, this is the place to find it. The never-ending

search for modernity is not for Kingsbridge. This isn’t Totnes, for heaven’s sake.

It’s a staid, old, Devon market-town that has somehow wan- dered into the 21st cen- tury (and is, sometimes, rather aggrieved at the fact). It’s got modern things, which it uses for the sake of convenience. But, on the whole, you feel, people around here are wedded to an earli- er way of life. It’s a refuge, a place of safety. Kingsbridge is set in the heart of some of the prettiest countryside that you’re likely to find this side of heaven. It has a tranquil estuary (yes, we know it’s not a real one as there’s no river. But it will do for us, thank you very much). And, when the sun breaks through, there is peace and tran- quillity to be had, just sitting along the quay and watching the steadily-rising tide. And, as the shallow waters gain a few inch-

es, experience the mounting excitement as a huge shoal of grey mullet follow the tide. These mud-loving fish inhabit the shal- lows and, in the spring, they exalt in the sun- shine too. Even those of a very respectable size will roll in a few inches of water, giving the spectator a glimpse of tail and fin and belly as the creature seems to grin at the resting trav-

eller saying: ‘Now, this is what we call living. This is what it means to be free in the ocean.’ Is there more to Kingsbridge? Of course there is. But we’re not going to shout about it are we? You’ll just have to visit – and find out for yourselves. Ask, and we’ll gladly answer your questions. And, you never know, some- one might tell you where the cathedral is.
