Five shows, two nights, theatre magic B

roadway is coming to Waterford this April as the High School Festival is

back with a bang and bringing better shows than ever to local theatre lovers at the Theatre Royal on April 12 and 13. The weekend festival will see five

secondary schools and stage schools from around Ireland battle it out for the coveted titles, including Best Show, Best Male/ Female Performer, Best Male/Female Singer, and many more. On Friday night at 8pm, local hopefuls

Encore Stage Academy from Dungarvan will present Disney’s Camp Rock, a show that’s full of fun, dance routines and laughter, a must see particularly for young audiences. Also taking to the stage on April 12 is

nearest rivals Gorey Community School with their production of Footloose. Forget Kevin Bacon, this is all about the talented Wexford students who have put their heart and soul into this show. Following the two 45 minute

performances, the judges will deliberate while a local entertainment group will showcase their talent and then the judges critique will take place. Saturday has an action packed lineup

with an earlier start time of 7.30pm. First to perform are Centre Stage Mallow who will present the first of two productions of Miss Siagon. Following the Cork school are Malahide Community School with their offering – the inimitable Les Miserables. Enjoying huge box office success at the moment, being it back to basics and see the live stage version from the Dublin teens. Concluding the competing shows is St

Peter’s School, Dunboyne, who also present Miss Siagon. Again a local act will entertain while the

judges deliberate and the night will conclude with the announcement of all category winners, including Best Show, Best Singer and more. Commenting on the standard of

productions during the festival, co-ordinator Vicki Graham said: “It’s not often you get to see shows of this caliber on a local stage

and to get two or three productions on the one night is going to be something special. It’s a perfect night out for all the family and theatre lovers and we’re delighted to welcome the hundreds of teenagers, musicians, teachers and pupils to our city, which is so renowned for the arts.” Organisers have also decided to use

the festival as a way to promote all that’s good about Waterford and have gathered prizes for contestants that include overnight accommodation in a number of local hotels for the winners and their families, along with passes to some of our most famous attractions, ensuring the visitors return to the city again in the near future. Tickets are just €10 nightly, and are

available from the Theatre Royal Box Office on 051 874402 or
