TASS Area Support Services

produced a promo video for broadcast on Top of the Pops. The single went on to sell about 700,000 copies, which is about ten times the number of downloads that it takes for today’s acts to get a No. 1. ‘Ernie’ is included on Benny Hill’s 23 track ‘Ultimate Collection’ CD, all songs written or co-written by Hill. Younger readers (by that, I mean those under 40) will probably not know his name. His TV show was sold to over 140 countries and can still be seen in many of them, but not here - where he is taboo. His ‘crime’ was that some (not all) of his humour was of the saucy seaside postcard variety, where Hill was always the butt of the joke and never got the girl. In the eighties, he was condemned in vitriolic fashion by ‘alternative’ comedians and the self-appointed gauleiters of political correctness, who put him in the same sexist/racist category as Bernard Manning. When Hill visited his hero Charlie Chaplin in Chaplin’s Swiss home, he was humbled to find on the shelves tape after tape of ‘The Benny Hill Show’. There is a resonance here that was

probably not lost on Hill. The genius Chaplin had himself experienced much worse treatment in his adopted USA from the courts and powers- that-be, leading to his permanent departure in 1953, before the inevitable deportation hearings.

If you can’t get to the TASS Books & Music Sale at the Anchorage Centre most Tuesday mornings, then leave your details on the number below or email me with your music ‘wants’, and I will keep a lookout for you: fundraising@tasstavistock.org.uk

Also, on the first Saturday of each month, TASS will be selling vinyl

records from its stall in Tavistock Pannier Market.

*‘You can’t get the wood, you know’ is the catch phrase of a regular character in The Goon Show: the aged Henry Crun (voiced by Peter Sellers). It is probably a reference to post-war austerity and rationing.

Do you have a few hours to spare each week? Home-Start South Hams, Plymouth and Tavistock urgently need more volunteers to work with local families who need our help.

• Are you a parent, or do you have extensive parenting experience? • Do you remember what it was like when your children were little -

Sleepless nights, teething, the tears and tantrums, being at the end of your tether and needing someone to talk to who understands!

• Do you feel you could offer something to local families experiencing difficulties?

• We offer high quality training including accreditation options and career development support. Travel expenses are paid.

We run ten-week one day per week training courses for home-visiting volunteers regularly throughout the year with the next one starting in April 2013.

We also urgently need Trustees to join our Management Board - no more than 4 hours per month would be required to attend meetings.

If you would like to find out more about either home-visiting or joining the Management Board, please contact Andrea Chandler or Lis Smith on 01548 854513
