BFA LISTINGS

sole responsibilityfor the regulation of the sector, but on a voluntary basis. It has three grades of membership for franchisors - full, associate and provisional. All have to comply with the European franchise code of ethics and follow the association’s guide to ethical practice.

Full and associate members must

have satisfied the association that they offer a franchise that is viable, ethical, franchiseable (the know-how is transferable and the system capable of supporting franchisees), and disclosed (prospective franchisees must be

provided with full disclosure about the business, prior to signing the franchise agreement).

In addition, full members must have a

proven trading and franchising record (the period will vary according to each business sector) and are subject to periodical re-accreditation. They must be fully established with a stable network that can be successful without recruiting additional franchisees. Provisional members are companies

that are developing a franchise system and working towards associate membership. They must have been in business for at least a year, have prepared their franchise documents, and be taking professional advice.

The BFA also has an affiliate category

for service providers - law firms, franchise consultants, banks, and media firms, etc. Prospective franchisees should check this list for the current membership status of franchises they are considering. This is the official list as of Feb 7.
