Starbucks begins roll out of UK franchising with eight-unit deal

● Kris Engskov S

tarbucks, the coffee giant, has opened its first franchise store in the UK on

the northbound A3 service area at Liphook, Hampshire. The store is the first of a multi-unit, eight-store franchise for local Hampshire entrepreneurs - Mark Hepburn, Anil Patil and Satwinder Sandhu trading as 23.5 Degrees.

Their other stores will include

leading territories in Hampshire, Dorset and Wiltshire at such towns as Portsmouth, Southampton, Bournemouth, Farnborough and Trowbridge. The three partners have significant franchise management experience in a competitive, fast-growing, quick-service restaurant environment. Each of their stores will create 15-18

new jobs, totalling more than 100. Starbucks plans to open further franchised sites across the country, building on the success of its licensed partnerships as part of the company’s strategy to achieve profitability in the

UK by opening stores in high footfall, profitable locations. Kris Engskov, managing director,

Starbucks UK & Ireland, said: “The UK is one of the most important markets for us. There are plenty of opportunities throughout the country for great coffee, and moving into franchising will help us to build our brand in those towns and locations we have not yet had the opportunity to serve.

Values

“We are proud to partner with local entrepreneurs, who share our values and commitment to doing what is right for our customers, build our business and bring jobs to local communities.” Mark Hepburn, of 23.5 Degrees, commented: “Our partnership represents our company’s progression with a brand we feel mirrors our own values, sincerely caring about the people in our business, and our commitment to
