Outstanding Determination Y

oung RAF Association member LAC Joseph Avery has been recognised as the best RAF Regiment Recruit

of 2012 at RAF Honington. He was honoured with the McFerran Prize as a highly motivated individual with the desire to succeed.

Joe joined the RAF Regiment at the age of 20 following in the footsteps of his father, who was in the RAF and his uncle who served in the RAF Regiment. After passing out from the Trainee Gunner Course, Joe was posted to 58 Sqn at RAF Leuchars, where he was awarded the McFerren Prize.

The McFerran Prize is named in honour of SAC McFerran, a Gunner from 1 Sqn RAF Regiment who lost his life on Operations

in Iraq. It is a trophy that is hard fought each year by all those going trainee gunner training. From each course the top student is given an award for their overall excellence during the course. One student is then chosen at the end of the training year to be awarded the McFarren Prize.

This year it was Joe who was, in the eyes of the staffs of Regimental Training Squadron (Basic) a student who showed great determination and outstanding marksmanship.

The CO, Sqn Leader Bob Davies praised Joe highly on winning the award, he said: “Against a very strong field of the top five students, LAC Avery’s determination and positive attitude shone through. Together with his high academic scores this led to him receiving the McFerran Prize”.

As part of the Prize, Joe was rewarded with the opportunity to fly in a Hawk at RAF Valley.

According to Joe, passing the course is something that cannot be done alone and it is all about team-work. Joe said: “Through individual and team based tasks everyone was supportive and inspired each other. I was in a section where every member shared the same desire to achieve a high standard”.

Joe is now using that same enthusiasium to benefit the RAF Association by getting involved in events to raise money for the charity’s work. Joe has taken part in the Honington 10K and now has his sights on running the Edinburgh Marathon to raise more funds for the Wings Appeal.
