New series of music set to launch at the National Trust
American roots music will fill the rafters in the National Trust Cotehele’s Barn Restaurant this spring. First on the bill at ‘Barn Grooves’, an occasional series of music in their atmospheric barn, will be Birds of Chicago on Friday 19th April.
promoting their new eponymous CD. Most of the songs have been written by JT, the remainder by Allison.
Vancouver, along with Trish Klein from the Be Good Tanyas. Now her base is in Chicago along with the rest of the ‘Birds’. Po’ Girl are taking a sabbatical whilst the individual members pursue different musical avenues, Awna Texeira having just released her first solo CD “Where the Darkness Goes”. The Barn Restaurant’s bar will be open and pre-concert supper can be booked at The Edgcumbe on Cotehele Quay on 01579 351346.
‘Last summer we saw the Endless Journey concert of desert blues musicians from Niger in the Great Barn at our neighbour National Trust Buckland Abbey,’ says Charmian Saunders. ‘It was unusual and spectacular so when the organisers approached us to try something similar here in our medieval barn we jumped at the chance. Birds of Chicago are the perfect band to kick off our Barn Grooves music series.’ Birds of Chicago are a new collective featuring Allison Russell of Po’ Girl and JT Nero of JT and the Clouds. Both of these bands acquired a considerable local following after their performances in nearby Calstock Hall in 2010 & 2011.
Their music is broadly classified as North American Roots; both Po’Girl and the Clouds have an extensive discography catalogue, however it is their heart-warming live performances which bring out the best of JT’s fractured country soul voice, harmonising with Allison Russell’s silver and gold tones. For a taste of their music, check out “Moonglow Tapeworm” on YouTube to get a feeling for their soul, or “Trampoline” as an example of their hip swinging style. The CD version of the latter is much more up-tempo and it will be interesting to catch whatever version they decide to play on the night. Touring with Birds of Chicago will be Joe
Faulhaber on guitars and Will Waghorn on drums/percussion. Birds of Chicago will play at Cotehele as part of their European tour,
