WHAT’S ON!
PLANT HERITAGE CHAMPIONS LOCAL NURSERIES
NEXT time you pick up a special offer six-pack of plants from your local supermarket, spare a thought for the small local grower and nurseryman. According to the conservation charity, Plant Heritage, organisers of the spring plant fair in Tavistock, nurseries need your support now more than ever. It is not just the recession: local nurseries are also struggling against the tide of cheap mass produced plants arriving from all over the world, not to mention the high cost of land and restrictive planning laws that make it harder and harder for new nurseries to get going.
For a nation of gardeners, we have a lot to lose. “Visitors to our plant fairs are always amazed by the range of plants on offer,” says local Chairman John Twibell. “Many are grown by small family businesses specialising in shrubs, or grasses, climbers, perennials, alpines, or even pond plants”. Plants are offered at a fair price too 10
and growers are on hand and always happy to offer expert advice. Buying locally also means that you are helping to support West Country businesses that are up against the big multi - nationals.
Plant Heritage is the charity behind the National Plant Collections Scheme.
There are over 600 plant
collections in the country, of which over 50 - from Agapanthus to Velthemia - are held
here in Devon. Group members also enjoy a vibrant programme of garden visits and other events.
