FEBRUARY 2013 Alpine Skiing - Big White Racers

RIGHT: Zane Torres, 13, and the Kelowna Ski Club’s Big White Racers are approaching the home stretch of their alpine ski racing season.Torres is gearing up to match the success he enjoyed last year. The Grade 8 student at Okanagan Mission Secondary School skied to a bronze medal in both the slalom and ski cross at the provincial championships in 2012, while taking a silver at the B.C.Winter Games.

BELOW: Racing in the under-16 division this year, Ryan Moffat claimed three wins at races at Sun Peaks last month and hopes to have similar success at the upcoming provincial championships where he placed third in slalom a year ago. His best result so far has been a second place finish at the prestigious Whistler Cup and first overall at provincials two sea- sons ago. A Grade 10 student at OKM, Moffat says the best part of racing is the feeling of speed down a Super G course and having a good day of skiing with his teammates. “Although I like hard and ice snow,a good power day is always a great break,”he adds.
