Metal detectorist Iain Fraser with the coins.

Iain unearths silver coins worth £500 with his metal detector at Seale-Hayne

COINS worth up to £500 and which date back to the 1500s have been found at Seale-Hayne, near Newton Abbot. They were unearthed by metal detectorist Iain

Fraser, who lives on the estate, owned by the Dame Hannah Rogers Trust. A keen local historian and member of the Torbay Metal Detecting Club, Mr Fraser obtained permis- sion to search land at the former agricultural col- lege and within two hours had recovered six post- medieval silver hand-struck coins. A couple of days later he found two more nearby. Among them were a King Edward VI sixpence 1547-1563, four Queen Elizabeth I sixpences from the late 1500s, a King James I shilling 1603-1625, a King Charles I shilling and a sixpence dated 1625-1649.

Other lesser important finds included Georgian copper coins from the early 1800s and a George III sixpence.

In accordance with the 1996 Treasure Act, which states that any more than two coins more than 300 years old and of high silver or gold content must be reported, the coins are with the finds liaison officer in Exeter and will be sent to the British Museum for examanination. They could have been deposited in the ground for safekeeping but never reclaimed or dropped from a purse by accident.
