in December and may return to Rio for Carnival in February. Between now and then, my family is visiting, and our itinerary includes the salt flats between Salta and Jujuy in the northeast, and the marvelous Iguazu falls on the Argentine- Brazilian border. Three summers in a row and a yearlong life-changing adventure? ¡Claro que sí!

Ariel Veroske ’10 It is really amazing to think about

how fast the past three years have gone by and how I am already half way through my junior year in college! I am still thoroughly enjoying my time at the College of Wooster in Ohio and have been busy with many activities this year. This past summer, I traveled to Northeast India to take a month of history courses at St. Anthony’s College in Shillong, Meghalaya, and I also managed an organic blueberry farm in Sherwood, Oregon. As a history major, I am well into my thesis research, which focuses on boyhood, masculinity, and wilderness in America between 1890 and 1920. I often remember my time at OES and am thankful for the wonderful teachers who guided me and prepared me so well for college!

Austen Yeager ’11 I am spending my fall term studying

cross-cultural psychopathology in the Czech Republic! I am living in Prague and taking courses right in the heart of the city. In the West, mental illness has traditionally been approached with a

biomedical model that views it as independent of culture. Here in Prague, we are investigating and comparing this Western approach to the “relativist” position, which assumes that, to a large extent, human behaviors are culturally determined and that the etiology and manifestation of mental disorders are affected by society and culture. It has been fascinating. We have had the opportunity to travel a great deal throughout the program and I have been lucky enough to visit many of the surrounding countries! I’ve been able to see Krakow, Poland, to see Auschwitz, the High Tatra Mountains of Slovakia, and the culturally rich centers of Budapest, Hungary, and Vienna, Austria. The amount I have learned and grown and the experiences I have had abroad are incomparable.

times of my life here already and am loving the Colorado weather, especially the sunshine.

Aashna Tiruvallur ’12 My life hasn’t been all too fascinating,

Scott Sheppard ’12 I’m having a great time at the

University of Denver and couldn’t have asked for a better place to start studying. The first presidential debate took place here and, although I didn’t get to attend, it was still more than an awesome experience having it be on campus with all the security and news around. I just got initiated into the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and am very excited to continue the rest of my life as a brother. I currently am looking into a major in international studies and possibly a minor in Russian or Spanish. Overall I am having some of the best

but it’s been very eventful! The people at Gonzaga are extremely friendly. The atmosphere here reminds me a lot of OES, and sometimes I half expect to see familiar faces of both students and faculty walking around campus because of that. My classes are fun but challenging. I made the “life-changing decision” of switching my major from biology to international relations. Although I enjoyed science back at OES, it isn’t really resonating with me here. But international relations or communications have always been things I’ve enjoyed learning about, so hopefully I’ll enjoy it next semester! Academics aside, I’m involved in Gonzaga’s International Student Union (similar to OES’s ISA) and have met the most interesting people ever. I’ve also been a heavy basketball follower after coming here and experiencing the amazing school spirit at a basketball game.
