SNAPSHOTS 3 Selected as Semifinalists
for National Merit Scholarships Seniors Kyle S., Hana L., and Miranda R. were selected as semifinalists for National Merit Scholarships. They qualified by placing in the 99th percentile of students who took the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which includes math, critical reading, and writing. About 90 percent of semifinalists become finalists, and about half of the finalists receive National Merit Scholarships. Finalists also are frequently offered scholarships by colleges.

for Stockholm Junior Water Prize Ajay K. ’14 was selected as a runner-up in the national Stockholm Junior Water Prize competition in Boston last June. His research is titled “Optimizing the Microbial Fuel Cell-Microbial Electrolysis Cell Coupled System for Sustainable Hydrogen Gas Production, Electricity Generation, and Improved Wastewater Treatment.” He was one of three runners-up and received a $1,000 award. It was Ajay’s second year representing the state of Oregon in the competition, and he was invited to present his work at two professional conferences.
Two Seniors Win Seniors Sam L. and Miranda R. with English teacher Rick Rees
Journalism Awards Seniors Sam L. and Miranda R. won first-place awards in the 2012 Santa Clara University High School Journalism Competition. Both submitted projects they had done as part of the Literary Journalism Project in junior English classes with teachers Kara Tambellini and Rick Rees. Sam won first place in sports writing for his article titled “Chump Car Racing: Real Racing, Real Tracks, Real Cheap Cars.” Miranda received first place in news writing for “Shelving Books? The Fate of Independent Bookstores and the Printed Word.” The stories were published in the Upper School’s online newspaper, the Blophish (
oesblophish.blogspot.com).
Senior Chosen As Semifinalist
in Siemens Science Competition Angela H. ’13 was named among 93 semifinalists in the Siemens Competition in Math, Science, and Technology, one of the two top contests for high school science research. Angela’s research was titled, “Synergistic Study on Doxorubicin and Dietary Compounds in Combination on the Inhibition of Breast Cancer Cells.”
