Changes at Meldreth Post Office

If you are like me, you may have walked many times past a large poster at One Stop explaining imminent changes to Post Office services, without noticing. This notice was up for about eight weeks before Christmas.

By the time this issue of Meldreth Matters is delivered through your letter box, One Stop may already have embarked on its refurbishment, which will involve a roughly one-week closure (from 31st January). The old Post Office area will be completely removed and the till area pushed way back and turned around, with Post Office services henceforth offered from the same counter as the tills.

While the space allocated for Post Office services will be tiny by comparison to the spacious premises we’ve been used to, the service will expand greatly in terms of being available virtually throughout One Stop opening hours, from 7.00am to 10.00pm seven days per week. The same cash withdrawal facility will exist. The Post Office will no longer be able to accept payment by cheque, nor will it be able to accept over-sized packages, due to the lack of space. But all in all, it is great news that we are not losing a Post Office and are gaining a service that will be open far longer than in the past.

Inevitably there is an important ‘use it or lose it’ message to convey. Or maybe it’s easier to think in terms of the fact that a soft drink cabinet taking up the same space as the new Post Office counter would likely be much more profitable. Let’s give the new Post Office as much support as possible!
