Now that health devices are rapidly entering the market, health enthusiasts the world over are able to track their fitness, lifestyles and monitor their bodies on a daily basis. In a data- driven world it makes sense that people can start to map out their health and wellbeing, and understand the impact of their lifestyles on their overall health. My prediction is that once these devices become even more mainstream the market for increased performance and wellbeing will become more of a preventative health offering for all consumers.

with my favorite workout songs and have all the information I need in the palm of my hand. However, I am the minority, and as a Sport Psychologist and health technology enthusiast it doesn’t take much to keep me engaged, but how will devices and apps be adopted by the majority of consumers?
On the technical side, the winners in this game-changing area will be the devices and apps that maintain the consumers’
part of their everyday activity and can seamlessly integrate with other devices, sustaining engagement as a result. Also, the answer lies not only in how cool and functional the devices are, but how they address the basics of human behaviour.

So, like a new year’s resolution, will the thousands of fitness trackers and apps purchased in January last beyond the spring? And will technology make a difference to the global obesity crisis? Well it remains to be seen, but in the meantime 2013 is set to be an exciting year for digital health, as tracking and monitoring our health and wellbeing has never been so easy, and so much fun!
