A taste for the great outdoors seems to have been spurned from Ed’s early career spent in The Royal Navy, which he joined straight out of school. Ed was keen to describe how the experience prepared him for the entrepreneurial pursuits that followed. “Being in The Royal Navy and the various military and security roles with the Foreign Office taught me some powerful skills” he says, “I was given a huge amount of responsibility at a young age and I guess that left me feeling empowered to


take on big challenges with endurance and persistence, as well as oversee the resolution of immensely complex and often stressful situations.


“In the forces you have to possess a clear vision of where you’re going and you have to lead your team through thick and thin to get there. I believe in leading from the front, by example and at a fast pace. I’ve found these to be great skills to possess in a business environment, especially when there is so much to do with not a lot of time.


“In the forces you also learn how to have a sense of humour. Even in the worst situations we were able to find the funny side of a situation and it was often the only way to get through it.


Now, when I am faced with a business crisis I’m able to remind myself that at least nobodies life is at risk!”

When do you get your best ideas?


When I’m doing Yoga or when I’m outside, walking in the mountains or in the wilderness.


Best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?


‘Be very mindful that the most critical commodity is the opportunity cost of your time.’ I make sure that what I spend my time on is of the highest value because as most entrepreneurs will agree, time is always in the shortest supply!


Company you wish you had founded?


ASOS. They have done an amazing job and have executed impeccably on their business plan.
