I can keep drawing new images that are relevant for today and a good example would be the limited edition screen print I created for this year’s Olympics.

What advice would you give to someone starting their own creative business? My

advice would be to get

themselves a ‘Kate’! Kate is my wonderful business partner who organises everything except for the illustrations. This leaves me free to do what I do best and get on and draw. I have always found it hard to put a value on my art work so it is wonderful to have a partner who can sell what I do, and has the vision and drive to take the business to the next level.

If you had the chance to learn a new skill, what would it be?

I would love to sculpt. Degas’ ballerina girls are my favourite objects ever. I would like to try and create my illustrations in 3d but have a feeling that they wouldn’t turn out quite the way I would hope!

Who are your favourite artists? Ooh, I could name so many … Mabel Lucy Atwell, Maurice Sendak, Pierre Bonnard, Norman Rockwell, Jessie Wilcox Smith … my list is endless and I am always finding artists who inspire me and make me want to try harder.

Is the ‘handmade’ ethic important to you and why? Yes, it really is. As the business grows, it becomes harder to maintain that personal handmade feel, but it is something we will always put first - even if it means we don’t make the biggest margin on the sales.

Suzie, who is in charge of dispatch, is a stickler for detail and our packages leave looking

beautiful

and, hopefully, have the handmade touch that means our customers return to us time and time again.

What’s next for ‘Belle & Boo’? So many things - a new range of wall stickers that we are now printing in house, a gorgeous range of chinaware by Churchill, beautiful baby clothes at John Lewis, two more Belle and Boo picture books, a stunning coffee table craft book and an extensive range of affordable quality stationery.

I think that’s it for the near future but watch this space as we have lots more ideas up our sleeves!
