TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones
We are all getting a little fed up I know, with the updates our computers seem to need all the time. There are the Windows Updates, Flash Player, Java and of course Adobe Reader and many more. Well, there is now one less to
worry about as Microsoft has incorporated Flash Player into their new browser Internet Explorer 10. This is the version that comes with Windows 8 and is not available for other systems. Something less to have to do.
Wireless printers are great and getting cheaper all the time, but do watch out if you are buying an Epson printer. We have seen this now more than 5 times, where the printer just did not work in another room to where the router was. It seems that the wireless receiver is just not powerful enough. We generally sell Brother printers, which admittedly are a little more expensive, but the wireless receivers ARE better, because we have been able to set them up in rooms other than where the router is!
Windows startup repair - ignore it has always been our advice. It generally comes up because the machine was not shutdown properly or you are having hard drive problems. It has always caused
more problems than it has solved, but even more so now with Windows 8. The new version offers 2 choices which sounds like an improvement, but our advice remains; steer clear.
The most frustrating thing I find with Windows 8 is that the Start menu has been removed. But, as with all innovations, it has really only been moved somewhere else. If like me, you miss the shortcuts the start menu provided, then try mousing over the funny new looking start button and then right click on it for a second or 2. You get a limited function start menu; it is not the same at all, but it saves you having to look around a bit!!
