Changes at the Robey Trust and “Tavistock Steam and Vintage Fair”
The year 2012 heralds the start of a new era for the Robey Trust in Tavistock. Firstly our factory “THE NEW PERSEVERANCE IRONWORKS” in the Parade Business Park, off Pixon Lane has recently been extended and improved and we are converting it to a working museum. We have also decided to change the name of our ever popular “Tavistock Steam Fair” to the “Tavistock Steam and Vintage Fair” so reflecting its actual nature more truly. Following the highly successful introduction last year of the “Hairy Toads” motorcycle club, we hope to see them this year in larger numbers, also we are hoping to have an extra Robey engine in steam at the fair making the number up to 5. We intend to make a few slight alterations to the fair this and every year from now on so that we can keep it fresh and always interesting, without losing sight of the raison d’ etre of the show, which is to demonstrate and run steam powered vehicles on the roads of our historic Tavistock, especially those built by the Robey Company of Lincoln. Entrance to the steam fair is charged at £3.50, free to under 16 year olds. Fair runs from 10am to 5pm, Sunday 10th June. For this year only the fair will be held a week later than usual to avoid interference with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations. Aspirations for the future In our works is a steam ploughing engine from Mozambique currently under restoration and one of our members has recently imported from distant lands a larger Robey engine than any other in our works. We hope to have the Mozambique engine in running order, probably in the next 12 months whilst the larger beast

6 Whats On 2012
has only just been started and its full restoration will take much longer. Our plans for the near future also include a further extension to the existing building to house, restore, maintain and display even more of our ever growing stock of Robey engines and equipment. Also one of our main aims is to make all our facilities accessible to as many people as possible and to this end we are trying to raise funds to provide a smooth and clearly visible access route to the public entrance enabling mobility scooters to get as near as possible and to provide parking for them, whilst inside we will install a chairlift and intend to provide wheelchairs for use on the upper floor. Visiting the Works
Members of the public are always welcome to visit our premises but it should be appreciated that conducting people around the site, talking to them and ensuring their safety consumes valuable time which would otherwise be spent on restoration and maintenance work so, whilst we do not charge visitors, donations to our cause are very much appreciated. There are collection boxes by the doors. If you wish to visit us please phone: Dave Davies on 01822 615960 for more details or e-mail:
z200@onetel.com. We also welcome new members to the trust whether active or not and we are always looking for help in the factory and elsewhere. You don’t need skills (all the better if you have them); we can help you to gain them come and try your hand.
