category this year, which was awarded in association with Just Eat, the online ordering service. This prestigious award was presented to Mushtaqs Indian Restaurant in Hamilton, Lanarkshire, Scotland.


Each year the BCA also gives a Special Recognition Award to an influential culinary personality. Past winners of this award have included Madhur Jaffrey, Cyrus Todiwala OBE, Anjum Anand, Heston Blumenthal OBE and Shelim Hussain MBE. This year the award was presented by Enam Ali MBE, Jenny Bond and MP Francis Maude to Dipna Anand, of Southall’s Brilliant restaurant, in recognition of her


successes in the catering industry. In her acceptance speech Ms Anand encouraged other women to follow in her footsteps.


Indeed attracting women into the industry was a key theme of the evening. BCA founder Enam Ali commented: “One issue we tried to highlight is the lack of Asian women in the curry industry and how there is a gender divide in restaurant kitchens which are considerably male dominated. This year we awarded a very deserving individual for her work in raising the profile of curry in the UK. We very much look forward to receiving many more nominations


from the public putting forward their favourite female Asian culinary experts in future.”


In his speech Enam made the point that the number of women working in curry restaurants was a lower proportion than in the construction industry, at less than 1%. He went
