News & Views Restaurateur fined for health standards breach

The owner of Wimbledon restaurant Curry Royal has been fined nearly £2000 after mouse droppings were discovered on chopping boards, tablecloths and inside condiment hold- ers during a check by environmental health officers. Abdus Subhan pleaded guilty to three counts of breaching food hygiene regulations at Richmond Magistrates Court.

The building has since been thoroughly cleaned and disinfected and Mr Subhan now employs a new pest control company to undertake inspec- tions every two months.

Merton Councillor Andrew Judge, cabinet member for environmen- tal sustainability and regeneration, commented: “We have an absolute duty to our residents to put their

needs first and we will not tolerate standards anything less than excellent when it comes to the public’s health. Merton has adopted the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme and we encourage food businesses to display the rating or customers can find out how good their favourite restaurant is.”

Solders charity benefits from curry night

Reading businessman Kiren Sharma, chief executive of Gravity Personnel, chose ABF The Soldiers’ Charity as the beneficiary of a special fundrais- ing night held at the Bina Tandoori in Caversham. Overall the event raised over £4,200, all of which went to this worthy cause.

ABF The Soldiers’ Charity gave grants totalling £4 million last year to help soldiers past and present and their families and also gave a further £3 million to help other service charities.

Mr Sharma’s next Army fundrais- ing event will be the Big Curry Lunch at the Berkshire Conference Centre at the Madejski Stadium on Friday, February 8. Last year around 450 people attended the popular event, raising more than £20,000
