HRISTMAS, as we all know, really is a time for children. They love the wonder and magic of Father Christmas, and this year it is possible to delight them with a trip on the Polar Express to the North Pole, writes
Warner Brothers Entertainment to bring the Polar Express train to the UK to two venues – Okehampton and Weardale, County Durham. Parents, grandpar- ents and children in the States have been delighted for years with the story’s message of hope and belief. With my daughter and grandchildren, we made our way to the old railway station at Okehampton. The platform was alive with carol singers and pyjama- clad children waiting for their very special ride aboard the Polar Express. As the children, parents and grandparents boarded the train to the sound- track from the film, they saw their favourite characters come to life. During the journey the conductor punched their tickets and chefs served hot chocolate and cookies. The chefs really threw themselves into their character, constantly chatting to the children and generally building up the excitement of the trip to the North Pole.
As the train pulled to a halt at the North Pole the joy on the children’s faces
was wonderful to see, as they saw Santa waving and his elves dancing. As the man of the moment disappeared from view the children began to wonder where he had gone. Then to shrieks of excitement from the children he boarded the train. Father Christmas spoke to them all and gave all believers – sadly only the children – a special silver sleigh bell. The story of the Van Allsburg classic had been read during the journey and receiving the silver bell was the pinnacle of their trip. The chefs led the singing of jolly Christmas classics and of course the grown ups all derived tremendous pleas- ure from seeing the children enjoying it so much. I witnessed one little boy who was a little uncertain about Father Christmas when he boarded the train but when he left he was a total believer. I am sure there were others feeling the same and that is what makes Christmas so special.
