Sporting heroes
AS 2012 draws to a close what an extraor- dinary year of sport we have to look back on.
In decades to come we will be able to tell the generations that follow, we were there. We saw Teign-
mouth paralympic shooter James Beavis take bronze to help Britain on its way to the greatest-ever medal haul. We cheered when local heroes Muse came home to carry the torch across Shal- don Bridge. And we partied along with millions of others as London showed the world how to cele- brate in style despite the worst economic crisis the modern world has known. Perhaps some of
our young hopefuls featured in this edi- tion will even be suffi- ciently inspired to go on and make the sporting headlines themselves. Now what an Olympic legacy that would be!
Eventing
EQUESTRIAN star and London 2012 silver medallist Mary King was a special guest at Teignbridge Council’s Sports Personality of the Year Awards. The ceremony is the district’s biggest celebration of sporting talent and an annual highlight for clubs, coaches and competitors. A former resident and winner of
the Teignbridge award, Ms King has represented the UK in six Olympic Games, starting in Barcelona in 1992.
In 2007, Ms King won the British Open Championships and was a member of Team Gold at the European Three Day Eventing. In 2010, she was a part of Team Gold at the FEI World Equestrian Games and in 2011 she took first place at the Rolex Kentucky Three Day Eventing and was named equestrian world number one. Ms King, pictured with
Teignbridge sports supremo Cllr George Gribble, said of her
appointment with the district’s sporting community: ‘It’s truly a pleasure to be invited to speak at Teignbridge’s prestigious annual sports awards. ‘I think it’s wonderful that the district makes such an effort to recognise local sporting success and inspire people to compete and I am looking forward to meeting the deserving finalists and their peers.
