South Devon Aspergers Group is an organisation for children with Autistic Spectrum Disorders, particularly Asperger Syndrome. We aim to provide therapies for children with ASD’S to help develop social skills, funded by Children in Need.
We primarily provide support for children aged between 5 and 16 years. This is achieved using an Art Therapist-Justine Fitzgerald, Interventionist’s- Lisa and Greg McCullagh of South West Autism Support Services and play workers that encourage greater interaction with others. Nearly all the children that attend the group have social interactive problems – those skills many of us take for granted.
For parents we have a resource library to find out more information about their child’s diagnosis. Parents are often left lost after they’ve been given a diagnosis. We help bridge this gap by giving parents the space to talk to one another and them being able to share their difficulties with other people who are in a similar situation and who understand. We have guest speakers come along to the group to help parents. This can range from Benefits specialist to other autistic groups on behavioural problems and autism.
We also have a play worker for the siblings. Siblings often unintentionally miss out on activities with family or friends due to their brother / sister requiring the majority of their parent’s time / support. We provide a variety of crafts and activities.
We aim to provide days out during school holidays for the whole family, subject to funding.
This year we had a 6 day camping trip to River Dart Country Park which we hope to do again this year, subject to funding. The children greatly benefited from this giving the chance to play and bond in a excellent environment.
The other activities included:- Kayaking at Decoy,
Swimming at Riviera Centre, Torquay, Ice Skateing at Plymouth, Wii Nights at Seal Hayne, picnics and BBQ’s.
On Saturday 22nd December we are holding a mega raffle at the Royal British Legion, Kingstiegnton.8pm With disco and buffet. £2 per adult. To raise funds for the future of Asperations. 1st Prize is £100. With many oth prizes
