"The Muppets transcend all age groups. Their satiric comment on society seems to delight all ages." Jim Henson

Muppet History

Jim Henson, creator of The Muppets saw the appearance of his first television show, Sam and Friends, a five-minute late-night puppet show he produced along with Jane Nebel, whom he would marry in 1959. The show featured some early incarnations of his famous Muppet characters, including a lovable frog named Kermit that Jim fashioned from one of his mother's old coats and two ping-pong balls. Jim coined the term "Muppet" to describe his unique combination of marionette and foam-rubber hand puppets. Then, in 1969, came the immensely successful Sesame Street, making Kermit a bona fide star. It wasn't until The Muppet Show, which starred Kermit and the egotistical and hilariously outspoken Miss Piggy, was introduced in 1976 that Jim and his characters became firmly established, attracting an estimated 235 million viewers each week in more than 100 countries.

After making three movies in his own right in 1989 Jim decided to entrust The Muppets to The Walt Disney Company (the acquisition was completed in 2004).

While Becki explains that he’s perhaps not the most "top of mind" Muppet, she feels that his personality opens the door to a whole new audience that isn't captured by the likes of Kermit and Miss Piggy. "So, let's partner our comical chef with kitchen and homewares," she suggested, "perhaps he can have his own kitchen basics product range? He’d certainly draw a crowd at any cooking show and why not even have him give you a recipe of the month if you’re a food retailer or supplier? There are so many opportunities for licensees and at retail." Becki also highlighted Animal, the
