PILATES

A New Year... ...A New You?

Another year and maybe a new year’s resolution to start Pilates? But which method to choose when there is such a wide variety?

I have been doing Pilates for over 30 years and have tried almost every method ~ Boot Camp Pilates, Core Pilates, Allegro Pilates(fast), Yogilates(a fusion of Yoga and Pilates) and Aqualates (Pilates in water), all very good in their own way, but I still favour the method I originally learnt and now teach.

It was devised by Joseph Pilates 90 years ago and was called ‘Contrology’. Only since his death was it re-named Pilates. Contrology is self explanatory, it was intended to be executed with control and focus. It is this aspect which makes it so effective.

I have been teaching in Muswell Hill for 15 years and still find Pilates a learning curve. Its versatility means the exercises can easily be adapted for any age or ability. I have taught clients from age 8 to 85, beginners to triathletes.

For re-habilitation after injury, illness or surgery Pilates is wonderful, as I discovered many years ago after a car accident. I broke my neck, which left me paralysed and hospitalised for several months. Having previously been a professional ballet dancer this was very traumatic both physically and emotinally. Pilates helped my recovery.

Now in my 60s I hope to continue Pilates for another 30 years if possible!
