SUSTAINABLE NEWS Affordable
hot water Truly affordable hot water has arrived in the UK and is set to take over from traditional hot water heaters that use gas or electric, and even existing solar thermal and PV systems. Ultima Solar of Chelmsford, Essex, has been given sole distribution rights in the UK for the Thermodynamic Panel, which is made in Spain. Ultima Solar specializes in the manufacture and distribution of renewable energy products that enhance the green environment. Thermodynamic panels are part of the next generation of green technology. Unlike traditional solar thermal heating that relies on the sun and daylight to generate heat, the Thermodynamic panels work day and night, in wind and rain because the panels are capable of absorbing both solar and environmental energy all year long, even during cold periods. The cylinder includes a simple-to-use control panel and installation is very straightforward as the panels can be fitted to a wall. For further information please telephone 0808 168 6888 or visit

Insulation for inverted roofs
Long term performance and drainage issues are a key issue when it comes to insulation for inverted flat roofs. ROOFMATE SL-A, the STYROFOAM extruded polystyrene product from Dow Building Solutions, has a closed cell structure which results in low water pick-up over time, despite the rigorous conditions on exposed rooftops. Dow Building Solutions also offers a water-flow reducing layer, ROOFMATE MK, which reduces the proportion of rainwater reaching the waterproofing. Using
ROOFMATE MK in combination with ROOFMATE SL-A helps to minimise heat loss due to rainwater cooling and therefore the amount of insulation required. STYROFOAM products have been used for inverted roofs in the UK since the 1960s so specifiers can rely on that longstanding industry performance when making decisions about insulation materials and helpful advice from Dow Building Solutions’ technical desk when making appropriate U-value calculations. Green roof ready
Richmond Park Golf Course, located close to the picturesque Richmond Park and the National Tennis Centre, looked to create an eco-friendly roofing system that minimised environmental impact while blending in seamlessly with the natural beauty of the surrounding golf course. Recticel’s Eurothane Silver foam board was the natural choice. Contracted by Garhigh Southern Ltd, the golf course requested a Kemper liquid applied roofing membrane and green roof. In order to blend in seamlessly with its surroundings, and turn the roof of the clubhouse into a real talking point, grass from the course itself was incorporated into the roof – providing one of the most unique ‘19th holes’ in the country. A closed cell rigid polyisocyanurate foam core faced on both sides with a multi-layer
UNITED HOUSE SECURE GRANT
United House has secured a €100,000 Eracobuild grant to develop its revolutionary WHISCERS internal wall insulation process in Europe over a three year programme. The pioneering social housing contractor is teaming up with the Vienna University of Technology and Athens University to trial the low-carbon retrofit technique in Austria and Greece. WHISCERS, which stands for Whole House In Situ Carbon and Energy Reduction Solution, uses laser scanning to measure the dimensions of a room, allowing insulation boards to be cut off-site and installed quickly, efficiently and safely with residents remaining in their homes throughout the process.
