Our next meeting is on Tuesday 8th January (NB not our usual first Tuesday for obvious reasons!) at 7-30pm in The Friends’ Meeting House, Bedford Car Park, Tavistock. We welcome all who would like to join us. At our recent well attended public meeting Chris
Cole, of Drone Wars UK, spoke on “Drones: the Future of War?” as part of a week of action against the rapidly growing use of these “Unmanned Aerial Vehicles” in surveillance and in conflicts where they have caused numerous civilian deaths. UK Reaper drones will be controlled from RAF
Waddington, Lincolnshire. Testing of Watchkeepers is carried out at Parc Aberporth in Wales. There has been almost no public debate or consultation on UK drones. Remote control of drones enables them to strike targets thousands of miles away, even if no war has been declared. Chris Cole highlighted the danger that robots and remotely controlled killing are lowering the threshold for war fighting. For more information see
http://dronewarsuk.wordpress.com We continue to campaign against the proposed hugely expensive replacement of Trident nuclear submarines. Our stall in November focused on this and on the dangers of drones. A good number of the public signed a petition calling on the UK government to release full information, so that there can be a public debate about the use of drones.
