TIM and Tim’s Top Tips by Tim Lambie & Tim Jones
Live abroad or regularly visit Europe and want to watch British TV? Up until now, it has been VERY difficult to do because they know you are abroad and do not allow it. There is an app now though that makes it possible. Called FILMON it is a free app, for various devices including your home PC (except iPods and iPhones at the moment) that will give you all sorts of TV and radio channels even when not in the country for which it might be licensed. Just go to
www.filmon.com
The way we use computers is changing all the time as is demonstrated by the changes we have seen in Wndows 8. They seem to be urging us towards touch screen computing, which I have to say is all very well for a tablet computer but not for something I want to sit in front of. We’ll see. The way we communicate with one another is also changing as is evidenced by the ending of support for Windows Live Messenger in the near future. Since Microsoft now owns Skype it seems that it is their preferred method for us to talk to each other (other than using a phone of course). It certainly seems the most popular; unless you own a Mac and have Mac friends of course in which case Facetime might be a good alternative.
Got an issue with a Mac saying it needs to be upgraded? I wrote about this last month, but did not suggest a solution, so here it is. Let’s say you have OS10.4, an Intel Processor and 1gb of Ram, then we can get your Mac to OS10.6.8. We can also upgrade the RAM and put in a larger Hard Drive. Now that it is upgraded to have the App Store, you can then purchase and download (but it must have 2gb RAM) OSX Mountain Lion (OSx10.8) - for about £15, and get yourself up to the very latest version of the Apple OS. We cannot say precisely how much it will cost each Mac to upgrade as each customer will be different, but let’s say it costs £200, it will save you £1200 which is what it would cost you if you had not read this tip. I think that is a value for money tip!!
Mobile email is something we all pretty much use these days in one form or another; either on a phone, PC or tablet. Usually, it just works as long as the settings are correct. Sometimes though, particularly when away from home you may not be able to send mail. This is because you need to use SMTP authentication and most new email accounts now provide this, but there are still some that don’t such as TalkTalk, Orange and Eclipse. We can help of course if this applies to you. Gmail & BT (and Sky and Virgin too) do provide SMTP authentication, but they all operate using entirely different Port settings (SSL) that mean when on a Hotel WiFi the mail may not even work at all, so do not be surprised if that happens to you. You will have to use webmail instead.
