NEWSLETTER ___________________________________March 2012 President’s Message!
We truly have been spoiled this winter, however I am still looking forward to spring and summer! Speaking of ‘spring’, SDHIMA has a great agenda for this year’s Spring Meeting to be held April 18th – 20th in Chamberlain. One of the key speakers is Holly Hoffman, the South Dakota participant on Survivor. Holly provides a motivational session that you will not want to miss!
As you all know, ICD-10 has been in the news a lot lately. CMS issued a news bulletin stating they will be delaying the implementation of ICD-10. This will go through rule making, which can be a lengthy process, so there has been no date provided by CMS regarding when ICD-10 will become a reality. While this news has me with mixed emotions, I feel the efforts many of us have gone through to prepare for ICD-10 should continue. We should utilize this time to become the ‘experts’ in ICD-10 and continue to assist our facilities with planning for ICD-10.
SDHIMA will continue to move forward with ICD-10 education. The ICD-10 Book Club has met and we have learned a lot from these sessions. Learning ICD-10 means ‘getting your hands dirty’ and practicing coding real everyday cases. Ultimately, this is the best way to learn and identify areas of opportunity whether that be regarding physician documentation or coding staff education.
SDHIMA continues to look for ways to educate members and provide current and updated information as timely as possible. I hope you will take part in the upcoming spring meeting to continue to gain knowledge and expertise in the world of Health Information Management. It is a great way to network with fellow peers as well as a wonderful educational opportunity.
Hope to see you all in Chamberlain! Stacy Reck, MBA, RHIA President, SDHIMA
