[EDITOR’S NOTE]
Unless you’ve been unplugged this past year, you already know that we’ve had a national election in the U.S. Most can agree that November 6 could not have come fast enough and the exhaustive campaigning left a desire to fast-forward to decision day (although you may be looking for the rewind button now). With the campaign now over and the next few years of leadership decided, most folks are craving the feeling to get back to the daily grind. T e countdown is on for 2013 and the end of most companies’ calendar, if not fi scal, year. We once
again fi nd ourselves in the stages of both trying to fast-forward past current concerns, while at the same time, treading cautiously in anticipation of looming changes to tax codes and economic uncertainties that await us. Perhaps Neil Armstrong, an American hero whom we lost this past August, had it right when he describes his moonwalk as “…one small step.” Whether fast or slow, each step we take defi nes our path. In this last issue of the Wire Rope Exchange for 2012, we highlight the small steps
taken by those without knowing the sum of their actions. Ken Frantz, a former contractor, started Bridges to Prosperity, an organization that advocates taking ‘small steps’ in the most literal way by building footbridges over impassable waters in developing countries. Frantz’ organization started with an idea inspired by a National Geographic photograph, and began to take shape because of partners like Harvey Howlett, Jr. of Heco Slings. In a similar fashion, we commemorate 80 years of partnership for the National Association of Chain Manufacturers (NACM), a dedicated network of the most prominent U.S. chain producers who continue to take the ‘small steps’ necessary to collaborate for the sake of the larger industry in which they also compete. Finally, we feature a new product, HinderRUST, a formula created by inventor Frank Reick, which represents the fi rst steps taken to signifi cantly enhance the lifespan of wire rope within the lifting and rigging industry in certain applications. So while it’s tempting to look forward, or sometimes easier to slow down or stop
altogether, the reality is that we don’t know what the next day will require. All we can do is take each experience day-by-day, and step-by-step. T ank you for a great 2012 and we look forward to sharing your stories and helping your business grow in the coming year! Happy Holidays!
