help. T ese clubs and the Rotary Foundation are now one of B2P’s largest donors. Frantz’s friend and volunteer, Randy Stacey was
responsible for the maintenance of gantry cranes that lift containers from ocean liners at VIT. T is connection led to the beginning of what would become a valuable relationship between B2P and Harvey Howlett, owner of HECO Slings, a Norfolk, Virginia, company that provides cable, rigging, and lift support for Virginia International Terminals (VIT). “Ken called me several years ago and set up a visit
with me,” says Howlett. “After listening to what B2P was doing in other countries, I told him HECO would help in any way possible. I sent a truck to the terminals to pick up the wire and store it at HECO. It helps VIT dispose of used wire while supporting a good cause. It’s a win-win proposition.” HECO Slings, in partnership with VIT, continues to be the primary donor of cable, along with other bridge cable installation equipment. And, to this day, Gloucester Point Rotary Club continues to support B2P through grants, donations, and volunteer eff orts, along with other corporate, collaborative, and implementing partners.

BUILDING TO INNOVATE: A GROUP EFFORT
“Our eff orts are concentrated on footbridges,” Frantz explains. “In many parts of the world, walking is the main mode of transportation. In a walking world, it’s possible to become isolated geographically.” VIT and HECO Slings have jointly donated tens of thousands of feet of wire rope cable to be used for B2P suspended cable bridge projects. Avery Bang, executive director for B2P, notes that HECO’s Howlett has set an example of giving in the industry. “It’s very rare to fi nd a person like Harvey,” she observes. “Not only does he give us the cable, but he takes it off the cranes, stores it, labels it, and then ships it to Africa, Asia, and Latin America when we need it. T e cable is also of the highest quality and has already been exercised under load, which is ideal for suspended cable bridges.” T e donated cable is second-hand and comes pre-stretched from use on the VIT gantry cranes. With the wire rope pre-stretched, B2P can more accurately set the tension and elevation of the rope on a footbridge, which signifi cantly increases the life of the bridge.
