PULSE / Featured Artist Steve Baffa “I paint things that I like; images that
remind me of my past and stand out in my mind. Things that stare back at my mind’s eye. I want that image to stare back at the viewer. They have to look at it, and they have to talk about it.”
STEPHEN W. BAFFA was born in Ardmore, PA on
Philadelphia’s Main Line. A graduate of the Art Institute of Phil- adelphia, Baffa now resides in Naples, where he has established himself as an alternative creative force to the mainstream art scene. His work can be found everywhere from local galleries to 5th Ave. South restaurants; popular drinking establishments such as South Street City Oven & Grill to private collections. Acrylics and mixed media are “weapons of choice” for this
pop artist. “I have little patience, and need to get an image down hard and fast and make my point, whatever that may be,” explains Baffa. Influences run from Impressionist masters to Frazetta, Warhol, Basquiat and Frank Miller, as well as the street art of Banksy and Fairy. The punk movement of the seventies and the underground art that it spawned have also lent inspira- tion. “I try to take popular cultural icons and boil them down to the essence of that particular icon, or take that accepted icon and twist it, combine it, or mutate it.” Dark humor pervades much of this artist’s work, mixed with
a little sarcasm and a dash of cynicism, not to mention nostal- gia. The Bat Pack (featured on page 36-37) is a great example of Baffa’s work hitting all points. To contact Steve Baffa directly, interested readers can
