“Picture Yourself on a Boat on a River...” written by: Larry Carsi O

r a canoe… or a paddleboat… or a kayak! With apologies to McCarthy and Lennon, I introduce Estero River Outfitters, a true jewel nestled in nature on the Estero River. With season

upon us, many visitors from the north will be looking for new op- tions for memorable, fun activities. Keeping this in mind, I looked for fresh “to do” opportunities with a broad appeal. Golfing? Been there. Beach? Done that. Everblades?? Not again. We want some- thing different! Exciting! Interesting! And of course, fun! Activities that can be the basis for great family experiences or unforgettable dates; places where both young and old can enjoy the day. So after a 20 minute drive south on US41, I met with Jeff Stuller,

the co-owner and manager of the Estero River Outfitters. His fam- ily started the business about 35 years ago, and his mother Pam still welcomes guests seven days a week. The family invites you to rent a kayak, paddleboat or canoe for an easy cruise down the beautiful Estero River. Although the Beatles may not provide the soundtrack, native birds will certainly serenade you with a tune or two! Just don’t forget to bring a cooler, some sunscreen, a baseball cap, and your fish- ing pole, and get ready to enjoy nature at its finest for a few relaxing hours. The winding two hour journey takes you out into Estero Bay, lending the perfect opportunity to kick back and forget your troubles, crack a cold one, and take a breather before starting the paddle back upriver. First opening in 1977 as a small bait and tackle shop (which is still

in existence next door), the Stuller Family soon expanded into paddle vessel rentals and a star was born. Says Stuller, “We believe this may be the easiest and most affordable way to get out on the water,” add- ing, “it’s not only a lot of fun, but it’s a great workout!” All you need is $27.50 for a full day pass. A two hour kayak rental is just $17.50/ per paddler and 16 foot canoes start at $27.50/per paddler. All the big names in boating are available here, including Seda, Mad River, Old Town and Hobie. “We never run out of crafts,” says Stuller with a smile. Jeff’s twin brother, Justin Stuller, also works at the shop. An

injury left him paralyzed many years ago, and to this day a benefit regatta is held for him each year on the river. This year’s event, the 18th annual, will take place on January 15, 2013, and all are invited.
