Specifically targeted kits created CORNISH FIRST AID SUPPLIES

A FIRST aid kit specifically targeted at those involved in chimney sweeping has been created by Christine Chaplin who runs Cornish First Aid Supplies. ‘Apart from the normal range of medium and large dressings, we have also added self-sealing finger dressings and eye dressings. To comply with the

BSI regulation kits, we have added nitrile gloves as opposed to latex gloves, a Resusciade faceshield, Tuff Cut scissors and a foil blanket. To customise the kit further, we have added five 20ml eyewash pods, burn gel sachets, hand gel wash, splinter forceps and sutures,’ Christine.

Christine created the kits after being approached by Peter Harris, managing director of Wilkins Chimney Sweep Ltd. He needed a customised kit for chimney sweeps which would comply with new BSI regulation kits. Peter was attending the AGM of APICS (Association of Professional & Independent Chimney Sweeps) and wanted a kit to show the delegates. ■ Article from APICS. APICS is a very friendly group of chimney sweeps, based in the South West, who used to get together regularly to discuss our problems and the latest technology available to us.

This

led to us applying for and becoming accepted, around 10 years ago, as a registered chimney sweeps association

under the auspices of HETAS. Consequently we are now a recognised association and attract sweeps from all over the country - see our website for details: www.apics.org.uk. We offer an introductory training course for sweeps, held every month, and we only accept sweeps into APICS after ensuring they have adequate equipment and have been assessed on a practical basis to prove they have reached a competent standard. We still hold regular meetings,

keeping us all up to date. We are particularly concerned with the safety of our customers bearing in mind the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning, chimney fires, bird’s nests etc.

So if you require a competent sweep, who can be trusted in your home to do a proper job, do have a look at our website to find your nearest sweep: www.apics.org.uk.

Our sweeps are well qualified to point out any potential problems and may even be able to put things right.
