Development blueprint
EXETER’S development blueprint, which will guide planning decisions until 2026, has been approved by an independent planning inspector. The city council’s Core
Strategy which sets out the development of Exeter for the coming years is considered to be a ‘sound basis for the future planning of the city’. The inspector, appointed by the Secretary of State, held public hearings last year to hear views on the Core Strategy. The council has now received the report setting out the inspector’s findings. Providing up to 60 hectares of additional employment land in the city and over 12,000 additional new homes to accompany this growth in employment are among the major proposals in the plan.
The majority of the additional housing is due to take place on the eastern side of Exeter at Monkerton/Hill Barton and Newcourt. Another 500 new homes are also proposed to the south of Alphington. The strategy sets out an affordable housing target of 35 per cent. It has a series of policies to ensure that developments are as sustainable as possible.
