A cautionary tale....

Well - after the engine work on my series - top end and replacing piston rings not to mention a DIY rebore, she had been running for about a week so I decided to clear out the oil to remove all those flakes of metal and possibly grit and give her some clean oil to run on.

I combined the oil change with replacing the 2 main bearing shells that I could access with the sump off. Cheap enough, so why not? Sure enough there was a silvery deposit at the base of the sump, and a gleam to the oil. Everything in there torqued up, and all the sump bolts on hand tight, or at least tightened by one hand in the centre of the wrench which is my own method of not overdoing it. Now onto the oil filter as that is where most of it would end up.

New bearmach oil filter - opened the box and... no oil seal. Now I have a new problem. Landrover expected to be in service for a trip to Inverurie tomorrow - what would you do?

After cleaning oil filter housing out, checked oil seal carefully and was still soft and in place so fitted oil filter in canister and carefully clamped down into place. and tightened up. Nice - cleaned up and went in.

Next morning - started fine and off we went to Inverurie.

On returning to her - there was an ominous oil patch under her, so checked the dipstick where there was no oil to be dipped into. Topped up with what I had and started up to check underneath. HUGE oil leak from filter housing seal spraying oil everywhere. Now this might not have been the brightest thing to do, but this is what I did. Drove to nearest garage - put 3L in (kept 2 as reserve) and drove straight home - watching my oil pressure all the way. It was quite easy to find my way home - just follow the trail of oil - ending in a large puddle of clean oil on my drive. Not only this but you could see the squirts as I had reversed out originally. Now there
