Smoke and Mirrors


chucking out vast amounts of black smoke under load but only when in 4th gear at low rpm. There was so much smoke that I was struggling to see following cars in the rear view mirror.

Everybody on the forum including me assumed this to be the usual suspects such as blocked air intake hose or faulty injectors etc. However after checking the air intake hose, oil bath and butterfly all seemed OK with them. We then swapped a different fuel injection pump (FIP) onto the engine and re-timed the engine. That still didn’t cure the problem. We had the

injectors tested and they were all fine. We put on a new fuel filter. That still did not solve the problem either.


At this point I realised it must be something internal to the engine and because black smoke is a sign of poor combustion rather than oil burning I reckoned that it was either timing chain or valves. I decided to remove the head and check that. So began a four week long saga that evolved into a full engine bay refurbishment as like any old Land Rover, once you start pulling them apart you start to find more problems than you could ever imagine being there.
