FASHION AND TEXTILES Level 1 ABC Certifi cate in
Sewing and Textiles This Fashion course runs alongside ESOL study, so you’ll also develop your maths and English skills. You will study two units of industry-led skills. These will enable you to learn basic skills in garment construction and the use of industrial sewing machines and pattern cutting. You will also develop basic skills in fl at patterns and practical knowledge in lay planning.
Entry requirements: No previous experience is necessary, but you will need to demonstrate some basic knowledge of fashion.
Possible next steps: Higher level courses, such as the ABC Fashion in Sewing and Textiles (level 2) or the ABC Pattern Cutting (level 2).
Level 2 ABC Certifi cate in
Sewing and Textiles This course covers a range of industry-led skills. You will cover fi ve units: garment construction using industrial machines, introduction to accessories, basic pattern cutting, construction techniques for bags and design principles for mood boards and trend research. You will also study ESOL with a fashion theme to develop your language skills.
Entry requirements: Ideally, ABC Level 1 Certifi cate in Sewing and Textiles, Fashion
and Textiles, Skills for Life or an equivalent qualifi cation. You will need to show your portfolio of work at a College interview or evidence of a level 1 qualifi cation.
Possible next steps: Level 3 qualifi cations e.g. BTEC Extended Diploma. It is hoped that you would then progress into Higher Education and / or employment.
Level 3 BTEC Extended Diploma in Fashion
and Clothing This course covers a broad range of subjects relevant to the fashion industry. You will study 18 units that include: visual communication, fashion illustration, garment construction, marketing, computer in design and the history of fashion / arts. As part of the course you will be given the opportunity to participate in industry-led projects such as the Alternative Fashion Week at Spitalfi elds. You will also have the opportunity to visit Europe/USA as part of your studies.
Entry requirements: You will normally need to have at least one of the following: a standard of maths and English supported by a general education, equivalent to at least four GCSEs at grade A-C, level 2 qualifi cations or related work experience.
Possible next steps: HNC/D which we offer at the College, Foundation course, BA Hons Degree or employment.
