WALDEN’S CONVENTION DAILY ISSA/INTERCLEAN® 2012

Environmental Leader Using Corn to Clean

The BioPreferred program was signed

into law in 2002, expanded in 2008, and expanded once again in 2012 this time by an executive order issued by President Obama. The goals of the program are to increase the purchase of bio-based prod- ucts and their use in the manufacture of a wide variety of products from furniture to toiletries and cleaning supplies and to diminish the use of petroleum, used for making such items as cleaning chemicals. Although the program is designed spe-

cifically for purchasing agents and con- tractors working for the U.S. government, because of the significant buying power of the federal government, it has resulted in many chemical manufacturers rushing to introduce new bio-cleaners to address the demand. Further, because of the govern- ment’s influence and because these prod- ucts are considered sustainable, many managers of privately owned and operated facilities are now also considering using bio-based cleaning products in place of conventional and Green cleaning products. However, there are a few things manag- ers and other end users should know about bio-based cleaners: • • •

They are not all alike.

Their performance can vary. They are not all Green or sustain-

able. •

Some fall into their own subcat-

egory, referred to as bio-enzymatic clean- ers.

Bio-based cleaners are derived from ag- ricultural products such as corn, soybeans, and even coconuts. Although they are get-

ting more attention today, the first patent for any bio-based product dates back to 1932. Many of these early products were designed for consumer use. But these products have gotten consider- ably more attention recently because of the growing influence of Green cleaning in the professional clean- ing

industry and the

BioPreferred program mentioned earlier. While the perfor- of

mance bio-cleaning

products has improved significantly, their effectiveness can vary just as with any other cleaning product. Those con- sidering using these products should test two or three from different manu- facturers. Sometimes it is also wise to compare the cleaners with conventional cleaning chemicals as well as Green cleaning chemicals. This allows for a more thorough evaluation of the prod- ucts and helps determine if a bio-clean- ing product will work well in a facility. It is also important to know that not all bio-cleaning products have been proved Green by leading Green-certifi- cation organizations. In fact, some that did meet Green certification standards at one time have since lost certification because they were made with H202 with d-limonese, an ingredient now considered an irritant that can cause al-

lergic reactions in some people. Addition- ally, unless the product meets the criteria of the BioPreferred pro- gram mentioned earlier, it cannot necessarily be con- sidered sustainable. Look for the “marking” of Green certification on a product’s label or the BioPreferred program, and—just to verify the product is indeed Green certified—ask your dis- tributor or visit the Web site of the certification organization. The most up-to-date information will

likely be online. Finally, we mentioned earlier that there is a subcategory of bio-cleaners known as bio-enzymatic cleaners. These are for- mulated with specific enzymes (a type of protein that breaks complex molecules into smaller pieces) and what are termed “good” bacteria that allow them to essen- tially digest soils. Bio-enzymatic cleaners have shown to be effective cleaning rest-

rooms, locker rooms, and even carpets, and if they are Green certified, they’re con- sidered one of the safest cleaning products available. However, one of their most promising uses has proved to be as an odor elimina- tor. This is because the enzymes can di- gest the bacteria causing the odor. What’s more, if kept wet and under certain condi- tions, they can continue to work as much as 80 hours after application, helping to ensure odor-causing bacteria are thor- oughly eradicated. Overall, the future of bio-cleaning prod- ucts, including bio-enzymatic products, looks favorable. In recent years, they have become much more cost effective and per- form as well as, and in some cases better than, conventional and other Green clean- ing chemicals. This gives cleaning pro- fessionals and facility managers another piece to add to their arsenal to help clean their facilities in the safest, healthiest means possible. 2012 Olympic Silver Medalist Dawn Harper Credits Gordon Brush’s FootMate System As One Of Her Secrets For Her Win

The FootMate™ System by Gordon

Brush is proud to announce that their com- pany sponsored Olympian, Dawn Harper, used the FootMate System to catapult her- self to a Silver Medal in the 100M hurdles at 2012 Olympic Games in London, Eng- land yesterday. Harper’s win marks the first major victory for the FootMate Sys- tem by an Olympic athlete. Gordon Brush jumped at the chance to sponsor Ms. Harper for this year’s event in London when they learned that Ms. Harper credits her regular use of the Foot- Mate System for improving her track per- formance. Harper narrowly missed gold by two one-hundredths of a second. Her time of 12.37 seconds was a personal best. “The FootMate people stood behind me and really helped me out,” Harper said in a post-race interview. “As an athlete, my feet take a constant beating causing foot issues that have af- fected my preparation and training,” Ms. Harper said. “Using the FootMate Sys- tem allows me to take care of my feet so that these problems do not occur. In be- tween and immediately after heats, I use the FootMate System to relax my feet so that my feet and legs do not cramp. After my day of racing, I use it in the shower to clean and massage my feet.” Ms. Harper added, “Proper foot health is important for an athlete as foot fungus, dry, cracked skin, and odors can affect performance. The FootMate System has helped solve these issues for me and was instrumental in my winning the silver medal.” “Gordon Brush is honored that the Foot- Mate System is a major part of Dawn’s preparation and significantly contributed

to her racing success. We congratulate her in winning the Silver Medal in the 100M hurdles at the 2012 Olympic Games in London. “What an inspiring opportunity for Gordon Brush to support an American Athlete”, said Ken Rakusin, the compa- ny’s president and CEO. Prior to leaving for London, Ms. Harp-

er was interviewed by seven year-old Har- mony Love Bailey, on how the FootMate System “was the key to having healthy feet and knees...having the FootMate System changed my whole

program and my training hasn’t had any issues being on the track day in and day out.”

The podiatrist recommended Foot-

Mate System is a complete foot care sys- tem for cleaning, soothing, stimulating, and massaging. It also can be used out of the shower to massage feet after an ath- letic practice. The FootMate sticks to the shower floor with suction cups; a long retrieval cord eliminates stooping after use. It comes with 8 ounces of foaming Rejuvenating Gel™ made with tea tree oil (a natural antiseptic), healing aloe, skin cleansers and conditioners. TheFootMate System is also beneficial for people with diabetes, arthritis, back pain, and pregnant women.
