MEET: Arty Cakes by Anna Stassen of www.sakurajewellery.com

Have you ever looked at a cake in

sheer wonderment and

thought “that’s edible artwork!”. Manchester-based cake-maker, Maha Muhammed of Arty Cakes, creates exactly that - cakes which look so sumptuous and indulgent that they are literally edible pieces of artwork. UK Handmade caught up with Maha to find out more about her glorious cakes.

Please tell us about yourself and how you got started? I'm a mum of two beautiful children aged 5 and 9 and I used to be a teacher in my home country of Iraq. I am currently studying to get my diploma level 3 in childcare. I used to live in Sweden and then came to the UK a few years ago. In 2010 I discovered that I could make beautiful buttercream cakes.

My 4 year old boy (a big Mickey Mouse fan at the time) asked me to make him a Mickey Mouse cake for his birthday. I had never attempted to make professional cakes, but my little man’s request was a MUST order for me. I started to collect information and do some research and thankfully had plenty of time to look and practise. The people who came to my son's birthday loved the cake and the taste, which made me really happy as the feedback was from an unbiased source. After that, my husband and my best friend encouraged me to consider starting a cake business.

During my research on buttercream (my kids don’t like icing and will only eat buttercream), I stumbled across some videos of stunning cakes made with buttercream flowers by an

American lady who posts videos as “Serious Cakes” on You Tube. I started to practice making flowers and was happy to be able to combine my love of baking, working with colours and amazing flowers. That was my starting point with the floral work and from there I went my own way and started to look at real flowers for more inspiration.

Your cakes are very glamorous and indulgent; what is the ethos behind Arty Cakes? I started my cake business with two goals in mind: creating stunning cakes which impress customers with their look but more importantly also with their taste. The ethos behind Arty Cakes, therefore, is to create unique cakes that not only look beautiful but taste just as amazing.
